VOLUNTEERS

The young people who are part of the community known as Carmen’s Place understand that it is a special place because the volunteers who go there do so with love. Carmen’s place needs more of these caring volunteers. Below is a partial list of the types of volunteers needed.

  1. Those who like to cook one evening a week or more and might also be willing to share with residents knowledge about food preparation.

  1. Those who would be willing to interact with the residents, who would interact with them as role models and mentors, volunteers who the residents will look up to.

  1. Appointment leaders who would be willing to travel with residents to appointments with doctors, social workers and court officials, volunteers who would be willing to go to the hospital with them, when necessary.

  1. Overnight chaperones who will stay with the residents, relieving Father Braxton of over night duties so that he can leave the shelter and stay in his own residence.

  1. A psychologist or psychiatrist who would be willing to visit the shelter and see residents there upon occasion or see residents in his/her office on a pro bono basis.

  2. A dentist who could visit the shelter on a pro bono basis several hours a month and then see residents who need follow up work in his/her office.

  1. A retired LGBT M.S.W. or licensed B.A.-level social worker, or someone with these credentials who is knowledgeable about LGBT issues, who would be willing to supervise college social work interns once a week

  2. A physician who is well versed in hormone therapy and willing to see residents in the shelter or in his/her offices.
